CHAPTER THREE__
'well, what did you expect? " Olivia asked her
face in the_looking-glass in her bedroom.__"I dare say he had a job to
remember you--she was very attractive, and_he's fond of Nel."__She started to
pack in a half-hearted(weak) way, filling in time until Miss_Cross was ready to go
into Bath.__In Bath she was told to park the car and return in two hours'
time,_which meant that she had the leisure(free time) to look at the shops and have
a_cup of tea. On the way back to the school Miss Cross, who had
hardly_spoken, said, "Come to my study before supper this evening, Olivia.
You_will be returning home tomorrow?"__"Yes, Miss Cross." It would have been
nice if she could ask if she was_to be given the sack but she didn't dare.
Fate had been tiresome(boring/annoying)_enough without being tempted(convince).__She had almost finished
her packing when Miss Cross's maid came to_summon her to the study. It was
rather worse than a visit to the_dentist, thought Olivia, tapping on the
door, and when bidden to enter,_she entered.__"Sit down Olivia." Miss Cross
looked her usual cosy self, but that was_nothing to go by.__"You have been
happy here?" she asked.__"Yes, Miss Cross."__"Good. You have been most
satisfactory---fitted in very well, and the_children like you. I am prepared
to engag
e you for the following term,_Olivia. The same conditions will apply. You
play tennis and_croquet?"__"Yes, Miss Cross."__"Good. Please return here two
days before the pupils." She consulted_the desk calendar.__"That will be the
fifteenth of April. Let us know the time of your_arrival and you will be met
at the station." She smiled.__"You are willing to agree to these
arrangements?"__"Yes, Miss Cross. I shall be happy to come back for the next
term."__"That is settled, then. I'll say goodbye now, since you will
be_leaving in the morning and I shall be engaged until lunch time."__Olivia
took herself back to her room, dancing along the corridors,_humming(droning/dull)
cheerfully. I may be an old maid, she reflected, but at least_I'm a happy
one.__It was raining when she arrived at Sylvester Crescent and the row
of_prim(formal) houses looked unwelcoming, but her mother was at the window_looking
out for her so that she forgot the sudden pang(twinge) of homesickness(nostalgia)_for the
school. They talked and laughed together, happy to see each_other again,
until Mrs. Fitzgibbon came to join them.__She offered a cheek for Olivia's
kiss.__"I was resting but of course your voices disturbed me. Are you
back_for good?"__"No, just for the Easter holidays. You look well,
Granny."__"My looks have never pitied me, I keep my sufferings to
myself."__Olivia winked at her mother and went to get the tea. Granny was
only_bearable if one treated her as a joke.__Her mother came into the kitchen
presently.__"It's only because Granny had her nap disturbed," she
explained,_looking worried.__"I'm sure she's very glad to see you,
love."__Olivia warmed the teapot.__"Yes, dear. How do you like the idea of
coming to stay with me for a_week or two during the term? I won't be free,
of course, but there's a_good bus service into Bath and I'll be there in the
evenings once I'm_off-duty."__"I'd like that, darling. I won't be in the
way?"__Olivia gave her parent a hug.__"Never, my dear. The country's lovely

PAGE 16
and the village is sweet--very_close to Bath, of course, but it's still
country."__Life was a little dull after the bustle(activity) of school but she had
saved a_good deal of her salary and took her mother out and about on
modest(humble)_expeditions(journey).__"This is lovely," said Mrs. Harding, perched(balanced) on top of
a sightseeing(tourism)_bus, doing the rounds of the famous landmarks(familiar sight).__"It all looks
quite different from up here." She turned to look at_Olivia.__"I think your
grandmother is quite pleased to have the flat to herself._She's been on her
own for so long now, it must be tiresome(annoying) for her to_have me there all the
time."__Olivia nodded.__"I know. Mother. I hope that after this next term
Miss Cross might_take me on permanently, then you can come and live with me.
The annexe_is small but there's room for two. You could join the WI again,
and_help with the church flowers and do the, shopping. It would be like_old
times."__There were two days left of her holiday when Mrs.
Fitzgibbon,_answering the phone, said, "It's for you”, Olivia. A man--surely
not_Rodney? You had better take it."__She handed over the receiver to Olivia
and sa;__back in her chair, shamelessly(brazenly) eavesdropping(listen in/spy).__"Yes?" She spoke
sharply.__"Cold steel," said Mr. van der Eisler in her ear.__"Did you think
that it was Rodney?"__She turned her back on her grandmother so that that
lady wouldn't see_the pleased smile on her face.__"No, it's the
surprise."__"I shall be driving Nel back to her school; we'll collect you on
the_way."__"Oh, but I..."__"Go back two days earlier, so Nel tells me. She
is going to stay with_her grandmother before she returns to school."__Oh
well. "__"Olivia, I must beg you to stop bleating(complain) and listen to what I have
to_say. We shall call for you in two days' time. Ten o'clock in
the_morning."__He rang off without so much as a goodbye and she put down
the_receiver.__"Who was that?" demanded her grandmother.__"You didn't have
much to say for yourself."__"There was no need," said Olivia, and went in
search of her mother.__Waiting for him to arrive two mornings later, her
mother said, "I've_made some coffee, Olivia. Do you suppose he'll drink
it?"__"Mother, I have no idea. He sounded so business'ike on the
phone._Perhaps he's in a tearing hurry to get to Nel's granny."__"Well, it's
ready if he wants it," said Mrs. Harding.__"But I do hope he stops for just
a few minutes your grandmother is_anxious to see him."__"I was afraid of
that," said Olivia.__He was punctual, standing there at the front door,
handsome,_self-assured(self-confident) and elegant in his tweeds. Nel was hanging out of the
car_window and Olivia said at once, "Oh, do come in.__Nel might like a drink
and the coffee's ready. Unless you're in a_tearing hurry? "__"Coffee would
be nice and I'm sure Nel wants to see where you live."__He opened the car
door for the little girl, who skipped up to Olivia_and lifted her face for a
kiss.__"I'm so glad you're coming back to school," she declared.__"I hope you
stay there forever and ever."__Olivia stooped her splendid person.__"How very
kind of you to say so, Nel. Come in and have a glass of_lemonade."__Her
mother came into the hall then, and Mr. van der Eisler shook her_hand and
smiled down at her and said all the right things in his_pleasant voice before
Nel was introduced too.__"There's coffee," said Mrs. Harding a little
breathlessly.__This marvelous man--and Olivia knew him. Her thoughts were
already_wrapped in bridal(wedding) veils(mask/blanket) and orange blossom(flower).__"Come in and meet my
mother."__Mrs. Fitzgibbon was sitting in her chair, the uncomfortable one,
and_one glance at her sufficed to cause Mr. van der Eisler to adopt his_best
bedside manner. He became all at once self-assured, deferential,_and the
epitome(height) of a successful man who knew his own worth without_being boastful(proud)
about it.__Olivia watched her grandmother's starchy manner melt (soften)into
graciousness(politeness)_while they drank their coffee and Nel roamed(journey) round the room,
looking at_photographs and ornaments(knick-knacks). Olivia had got up to show Nel the
little_musical box on the side-table when she heard her grandmother
remark,_"Of course, Olivia is quite unskilled. Never needed to work, and
now_that it is unfortunately necessary her limitations are evident.
